As of the census of 2000, there were 5,859 people, 2,903 households, and 1,738 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,572.0 people per square mile (621.2/km²). There were 3,047 housing units at an average density of 671.5 per square mile (253.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; <1% Pacific Islander; and <1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0%. There are 2 903 households out of which 36% had children under the ageof 18 living with them, 56% were married couples living together , 10% had a female householder with no husband present,, and 20% were non-families . 27% Of all households were made up of individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older

The town was organized on April 6, 1907. The first post office in Herriman was established on July 24, 1906. On November 15, 1907, the name of the town was changed to Herriman after General Hiram Alexander Herriman who served as a brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War and later became an associate justice on the Utah Territorial Court. In 1923, Harry Huggins donated land to form what would become Herriman Elementary School which opened its doors that fall. On October 8 of that year by vote of the community it approved a motion to rename High School for local heroes World War I veteran Charles Wiltse and his wife Florence Earle Wiltse who fought withember Company E 2-8th Infantry RegimentUtah National Guard at Belleau Wood near Ypres Belgium Campaign 1917-1918 In memory of their husbandCharles Wiltse and their daughterFlorence Earle Wiltse high school now bears their names
Herriman, Utah was founded in 1912 by John A. Herriman and his wife, Lillie B. Herriman. The town was named after John A. Herriman's father, Herbimeron (or Herremont). The first post office was established in 1912, and the town had its first residents in 1916. In 1924, the county seat of Wasatch County was moved from Ogden to Herriman, and the name of the town changed to honor this move. The community grew rapidly during World War II as many people enlisted in the military or served in related roles. After the war ended, most of the growth stopped as people returned to their homes or went back to work. However, a few businesses opened up during the late 1990s and 2000s resulting in some growth again during this time period.
