In 1912 the name of the town were changed to Duchesne to honor General Angus McDowell Duchesne who served as Commander-in-Chief United States Army during World War I. In 1926 the name were again changed to Herriman to honor Samuel L. Herriman III who served as Mayor from 1954 until his death in 1966. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. Herriman, Utah is a small town located in southern Utah. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Herriman was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847. In 1872, the townsite of Herriman and surrounding ranchlands were organized as a county seat of Carbon County. In 1907, however, Carbon County was dissolved into Summit County and Herriman became part of Summit County. The first settler in what is now Herriman was John Atherton who arrived on horseback in 1847. Atherton built the first cabin on the current site of Herriman in 1849. His wife Agnes Hosea Atherton lived there until her death in 1865. According to one source, Agnes may have been instrumental in introducing Latter-day Saints to the area and helping to start the community's economy. In 1872, when Carbon County was organized, it included all of present-day Utah except for a small portion that later became part of Provo City Limits within Utah's Provo Mayoralty District (now called First Ward). Jacob Hamblin purchased some land east of present-day Herriman from David Whitmer for $5 per acre ($30 per square mile). Hamblin founded a school and store in what is now Herriman and named it after his daughter Emma Hamblin Whitmer (1812–1892). One account reports that Emma donated money toward building a church which she also served as president pro tempore from 1850 to 1852; this church remains standing today as browseable online history resource at LDS Church History Library website . After developing additional land west of present day Herriman where he built two more stores and another school (the presently extant Anson School), JacobHamblin sold his land totaling 117 acres ($2 million) to Brigham Young for $10 per acre ($40 per square mile ). Young laid out buildings on this new land including a meetinghouse, farmsteads, schools, cattle drives and other essential services needed for settlement before moving the residents into those structures during winter weeks between October 1860-March 1861 while they awaited federal approval for their location . This action marked perhaps one of Brigham Young’s most significant contributions towards laying out an agricultural community capable of sustaining itself long term – Salt Lake Valley had not yet been established as its ultimate destination
