Herriman is a small town in Utah, just south of the Wasatch Mountains. The population was 4,628 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. Herriman is located in Kane County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Herriman were Mormon missionaries whoWorded about it from their adventures in central California in 1847 and 1850. They named the place "Herriman" after one of their own members and mission president, David Herriman. The town site was surveyed by George Atherton and laid out by him and his associate Hardin Sprague on October 11, 1857. The first post office was established at Herriman on November 15, 1857; it was known as Cedar City until May 1, 1861 when it changed its name to Herriman to honor David's friend and fellow missionary John Sommersberger (1801-1868). Although Spruce Grove had been a thriving community for over seventy years before annexation by Clearfield in 1902, there remained much interest among residents of eastern Utah in exploring the Wasatch Mountains west of Fort Bridger for minerals and other resources lying undiscovered beneath them. Accordingly, on August 8th 1893 – just three years after territorial incorporation – a group including John Dickey (1858-1935) organized an expedition under the guidance of Captain Wm Burt Stanton (1851-1927) which resulted in discovery of several coal seams within easy reach of Hyrum Valley Ranch near present day Park City. On July 22nd 1896 two prospectors discovered oil wells at precisely 12 degrees 25 minutes south latitude while mapping existing oil beds off Orchard Mesa southeast of Hyrum Valley Ranch; this made possible production from those wells during World War I as Welles Camp became available for military use adjacent to Provo Airport*. In 1908 Brigham Young announced his candidacy for U.S President on the platform that he would make polygamy public so that all people could be comfortable with it†; he received more than 60% of the votes cast but lost because only white men were allowed to vote*‡ In 1916 Heber Jenson succeeded Brigham Young as president with new restrictions placed upon polygamy which continued throughout his tenure† Although women did gain suffrage following passage of state constitutional amendment (#2) ratified December 6th 1920*, they were not able to hold elected office until 1994 when Jackie Biskupic became Mayor* In 1927 Joseph Fielding Smith directed local bishops to begin proselytizing within national borders† resulting in formation of numerous LDS congregations scattered around North America† By 1978 there existed more than 3600 LDS congregations across North America§§¶ After serving as Mayor since 1993 she resigned effective February 17th 2002 due to term limits set by her successor Merlin Olsen §§¶ As mayor she successfully lobbied Salt Lake City Councilmember Dwain Mason for creation or expansionof two city blocks eastward from Temple Square—a development now known as Sheepshead Bay §§¶‡ By all accounts she was a brilliant politician who achieved great things despite being very busy trying unsuccessfullyto get something done *‡ https://www4salesforcemarketingalliance dot net/article/herrimans-utah-citysketches
