When the Utah Territorial Legislature approved the creation of Herriman in 1847, it was one of the most eastern towns in what is now southwestern Utah. It was a small town at that time with a population of about sixty people. But soon, firearms were being shipped into and through Herriman on a regular basis. The first firearm to be imported into Herriman was an English 12-gauge shotgun imported by John Witherspoon. The gun was used for target shooting and hunting game in the area. Eventually, other rifles and shotguns followed including an American rifle purchased by James White in 1881. Over time, more people started arriving in Herriman to pursue their hobbies of firearms manufacturing and hunting. In 1905, when Ezra Crouse bought the business from John Witherspoon, he began importing rifles and shotguns into town from all over America. Ammunition also became a big part of the local economy as guns became more popular among settlers in this region during this time period. In 1976, Amos Hargrave took over ownership of the business from Ezra Crouse and has continued to run it ever since making sure that it remains one of the most reputable firearms manufacturers in Utah today.

The UCA also helped develop the town into an economically significant center during World War II. After the war ended, however,ribald barroom brawls replaced economic growth as main focus in Herriman. In recent years, however, downtown redevelopment has brought new life to the community while preserving its historic architecture and resources
Herriman was founded in 1877 by John Herriman and his wife Rebecca. The town was named after John's father, who had been born in Scotland and came to Utah as a Mormon missionary in 1857. The town grew rapidly from its initial population of only 10 people to over 100 within five years. In 1896, the first post office was established in the town. By 1907, the population had reached 2,500 people. In 1933, Herriman became part of Provo City.
