Herriman is a small town in Carbon County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to set foot on this land were Labadie and his party in 1847. In 1850 Brigham Young led a group of Mormons to what would become Herriman after they were driven out of Nauvoo by the Illinois mob. The Mormon pioneers named their new settlement after George Herriman, an American businessman and senator from New York who had sent them supplies during the winter of 1847-1848 while they were building Fort Bridger in Wyoming Territory. The town began as a small agricultural community with only sixty residents in 1870; however, it soon became an important center for trade due to its location at the junction of two wagon trails that ran through Carbon County. In 1915 Herriman's post office was established and it remained active until it closed in 1973. Today, most of the original buildings from when Herriman was first settled remain standing including the old schoolhouse which is now used as a church and museum; however, most notable are the many pioneer homes that have been demolished over time including one that still stands today known as "Mormon Hill". Additionally, several businesses have also been built along Highway 84 within walking distance of the old town plaza which has served as a gathering place for locals since its construction beginning in 1922.
