Herriman, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. The population was 1,341 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Provo-Orem metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Herriman were Mormon missionaries in 1847. The community was named after Captain John F. Herriman, who had served as an American missionary in Mexico and then Peru before coming to Utah in 1848. The first school was started in 1850 and the first post office was established in 1852. In 1861, Herriman became one of fourteen towns incorporated into Provo County. In 1870, construction began on the Weber Dam which would provide water for irrigation purposes and ultimately become one of Utah's most important symbols of growth and progress. The dam also provided employment for many people in Herriman and surrounding communities during its early years. In 1924, Weber Dam caught fire which destroyed much of the dam but did not prevent future development within the town itself or within adjacent towns such as Cottonwood Heights and North Jordan. Today, portions of both dams remain intact with visitation allowed only from authorized personnel (the National Park Service). Today, Herriman is a quaint small town that still retains some cultural values unique to its residents dating back to pioneer days including annual Pioneer Day Parade which celebrates local history and heritage; more than twenty businesses located throughout downtown; a large riverfront park complete with pavilion; two churches - First Baptist and Independent - each serving different denominations; numerous historic homes (many dating back to pioneer times); three museums - LDS Church Museum (1924), Anthracite Coal Mine Museum (1893), local historical society (1969) - all providing visitors with interesting insight into their communal past while preserving its present day character;library which serves as a vital resource for residents along with plenty of retail options including several restaurants/bars along Main Street;and twelve golf courses scattered throughout its rural setting making it an ideal place to spend time outdoors whether playing golf or simply relaxing on one of these beautiful landscapes!
