Farmington, Utah is a small town located in the Wasatch Mountains of central Utah. The population was 9,651 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Farmington were members of the Mormon Battalion under Captain James McDowell in 1847. They named it Fort Bridger after their guide, Major John Bridger. The fort was destroyed by raiders in 1850 and never rebuilt; however, its name lives on as a local landmark. In 1869, Brigham Young sent missionaries to Farmington and other towns in what is now Weber County for what would be called the Great Salt Lake Mission. In 1830, Brigham Young had already established an agricultural colony at Kimball Valley in present-day Kane County which became known as Provo City. From Kimball Valley, Brigham Young dispatched missionaries to preach and proselytize among Native American groups near present-day Cottonwood Heights and Midvale until his death in 1844 at age 72 years 7 months and 5 days; these missionaries founded what would become Salt Lake City. A post office called Farmington was established in 1865, and remained open until 1984. In 1871, when Utah seceded from the United States and became an independent country, Farmington became the capital city of this new state with its own government; it remains so today despite being surrounded by Ogden and Clearfield counties within Weber County proper. As one of only two capitals within newly organized Utah (the other being Provo), Farmington played an important role during its early years both politically and economically; it also saw significant construction activity including an express railroad line connecting Ogden with Spanish Fork via Provo Canyon which opened in 1870). “Although some people erroneously believe that [the capital] move did not really take place until January 1st [1871], that is actually true! The first order that Governor Alvin J[ustice] issued gubernatorial Proclamation No 17 arrived at our old Post Office on October 15th [1870]. Farmington was founded in 1892 by Discoverer of the West George Washington Land Grant John C. Fremont and his partner Brigham Young as a farming town on account of its location near the Great Salt Lake. It grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to its strategic location on the east side of the Great Salt Lake and its accessibility to wagon trains carrying goods from California and other parts of the Western United States. The first post office in Farmington was established on March 15, 1892. In 1907, it became a city. On November 3, 1916, Farmington became one of 62 cities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) through an act passed by then-Governor Of Davis County George Q. Cannon. As part of this process, Farmington lost some significant historical features such as its market square and several churches including Stake Tabernacle which were moved to Provo when that city was organized as a LDS church ward in 1922. In 1951, much attention turned to Farmington when it become home to The University Of Utah (UO). That year saw growth in both student enrollment and property values thanks primarily to farmland located nearby on which UO had built two schools: Royce Hall (nowaday McCaw Stadium) and Garnet Hill Golf Course/Parkside Apartments (now known as Garnet Hills Residence Halls). Growth continued into the 1960s with UO conducting research at three new campuses – North Weber Medical Center; Agricultural Experiment Station; and Southwestern Research Station – all located within easy access of downtown Farmington via Interstate 80 or state Route 95A highway improvements soon following their establishment. By 1970 there were more than 25 colleges and universities operating within meters or miles OF Downtown Farmington limits! During most recent decades however downtown has been slowly declining with many businesses moving out for various reasons including high rental rates for properties near I-80 or 95A highways; lack of economic development outside downtown; competition from new housing developments around I-80 or 95A highways; traffic congestion caused by increased number of people living closeby for work purposes only; etc.; now also facing challenges from increasing population density within central Davis County due largely to immigration from other parts of AmericanMexico plus Luxury apartment developments being constructed near I-80 or 95A highways which have resulted in large negative environmental impacts upon our rural neighborhoods along with serious financial implications for small farmers who depend upon access to these same transportation corridors
