Farmington is a city in Cache County, Utah, United States. The population was 27,567 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cache County. Farmington was founded on July 12, 1847 by Captain George Lewis and his party of settlers from England as a mission station called Fort Laramie. The first post office in Farmington opened on December 6, 1849. The town was platted on April 15, 1850 by J.C. Hanks and Wm. Aiken under the name of Fort Laramie; it reverted to its original name on October 9, 1865 after it became part of Cache Valley division of Utah Territory. On November 3, 1862 an armed force led by Lt.-Colonel John Sibley burned down the Kirtland Hotel in Farmington during the American Civil War when pro-slavery demonstrators were occupying the building to protest Union army General Ulysses S. Grant's decision not to recognize Confederate General Robert Easley as military commander of all Utah Territory following that state's secession from the United States that same year. A new courthouse was built in 1903 and named for Judge Louis Payson Webb who had donated land for it and served as its first judge; construction began on November 14, 1902 and was complete two years later when Webb died unexpectedly while serving as its namesake's attending attorney general; Webb had also been instrumental in organizing Cache Valley into a separate self-governing territory within Utah Territory upon its creation days earlier that year. In 2006, it became an official city of Utah with passage of legislation enabling it to annex rural areas east of Interstate 880
Farmington, Utah was founded on November 8, 1847 by James Winchester. The town was named for the farm that the first settler, Joshua Farmington, purchased in 1836. The original town boundaries were 1 mile north of Main Street and 3 miles east of East Avenue. On February 14, 1850, Farmington became a part of Salt Lake City and was annexed by the city on July 17, 1912.
