Farmington is a city in Mesa County, Utah, United States. The population was 10,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria, Arizona Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Farmington was David Hinkle in 1847. He built a log cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street. The first store in Farmington was established by Wm. Fenton and his brother-in-law Jacob Beasley in 1851. In 1867, Jno. Pritchett founded the First National Bank which still stands on Main Street today. In 1870s and 1880s, farmers set up small businesses around irrigation canals that ran through town center to produce crops for local markets (the canals are now gone). By 1900, there were over 100 businesses in Farmington with an output of $1 million annually! In 1903, Virgil Goodyear organized the Cotton Milling Company which became one of America's leading textile companies until its bankruptcy in 1907. Goodyear also founded the Phoenix Land and Water Co., later renamed Valley Forge Power Plant Company LP; it became one of America's leading electric power producers until its closure in 1978. A major development during this time period was the growth of downtown as a commercial district with several large department stores such as Sears and Kressner followed by smaller shops before eventually being replaced by new high-rise buildings during the late 1970s and early 1980s when downtown suffered from economic decline.. Afterward came another period where there were no major changes to what characterized life within FarmINGTON prior to various disruptions brought about by events such as Hurricane Katrina which hit Louisiana on August 29th 2005; tearing through Baton Rouge killing more than sixty people including thirteen members of the US Naval Academy atagent base]].
