Farmington, Utah is located in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah and was established by Mormon settlers in 1847. The city was named after Farmington, New York, which at the time was one of the largest settlements in the United States. The first post office in Farmington opened in 1848. In 1870, the city annexed the adjacent town of Montezuma. The population of Farmington reached a peak of nearly 100,000 in 1930 but declined to about 60,000 by 1990. Since then, growth has been modest and it has since become an agricultural center with a population that includes many farmers and their families. The city traces its origins to two important events: the arrival of Mormon pioneers in 1847 and the building of Fort Leavenworth on Mountain View Mesa on December 16, 1870. At first glance, these two landmarks would not appear to have much connection until later when it was discovered that both were part of a larger project called “The Great Western Project” which aimed to connect eastern Utah with what is now western Nevada and Arizona through horseback rides and wagon travel. Throughout most of its history as a small community near Brigham Young University (BYU), Farmington experienced sporadic growth due largely to its location within easy reach for LDS missionaries who traveled throughout the area preaching religious teachings such as baptism by immersion for those who desired it and land acquisitions for temple construction. However, during World War II many residents decided against joining military service because they felt that warfare would be too dangerous; instead they contributed money towards food relief programs Duffey said helped “destroy[ed] 10 million tons worth of food thereby saving 1 million lives” (Duffey). Despite this reluctance some people did serve during World War II including Mayor John Waddell who donated his home and garage to government use while he served in the military; other notable locals such as Orville Wright also volunteered their services or donated property (Laughlin). After World War II ended there was significant growth back into town thanks largely to Interstate 80 which connected nearby Provo with major metropolitan areas across America. This highway not only increased economic opportunities but also brought more tourists into town which led to increased spending on local businesses along with increasing joblessness rates among locals which caused some citizens to leave for better opportunities elsewhere (Ferguson). Today despite growing pains due mainly to demographics changes – more people living outside Ofheganza – Farmington remains an important community within its own right with strong ties to BYU athletics as well as its downtown district full of art galleries and restaurants popular among students from surrounding universities. Although there are occasional setbacks like when a new church built next door displaced an old school tower causing some inconvenience; overall crimerates have remained relatively low given that Salt Lake City is one of America’s most violent cities (Mueller).
Farmington was founded in 1847 by John C. Fremont and his family. The city grew rapidly after the opening of the Utah Central Railroad in 1868, and in 1886 it became the county seat of Farmington County. The population of Farmington had grown to over 200 residents by 1910, when it merged with Cache County to form UnifiedUtah Territory. In 1912, Farmington became a part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area.
