Farmington is a small town in Utah, United States. The population was 4,746 at the 2010 census. Farmington is located in south-central Utah, on the San Juan River. It is included in the Ogden–Clearfield metropolitan area. The first people to settle in Farmington were members of the Mormon Battalion who were called to fight for Brigham Young and his army during the Mexican-American War. They arrived around 1847 and built a place known as Fort Laramie near present-day Guthrie. In 1850, they moved to what is now Farmington after purchase of 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from David Waddell and others. The town was platted on May 15, 1851 by John Smeaton with Abee Smeaton as surveyor. The first store opened in Farmington on July 1, 1855 by Waddell and Orson Hyde, both natives of Boston, Massachusetts. On November 14th of that year saw the opening of the first post office which functioned until 1959 when it was replaced by a phone line downtown which still functions today In 1861 three Civil War veterans named Fremont Dushaun Smith (1813-1870), George Prentice (1834-1921) and Jesse Lanyon (1838-1900) came to farm land at what is now downtown Farmington and started an agricultural enterprise that continues to this day providing important economic stability for the community On December 12th 1870 Brigham Young led a group of Mormons westward on foot through snowdrifts across Utah Territory towards Salt Lake City where they founded their own ecclesiastical colony called Nauvoo Landing Farming became an importantstay for many residents due to ample rainfall throughout winter months which allowed farmers opium poppy crops while also cultivating other vegetables such as corn and beans In 1902 James Kapp donated 8 acres (3 hectares) adjacent to his home southwest corner Main Street for use as a schoolhouse becoming one of only two instances such generosity ever given Today Agricultural Hall remains oneofthe most significant landmarks within FarmINGTON .
