Farmington is a town in Utah, United States. The population was 8,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Farmington was founded in 1847 by citizens of Vale, California as a small farming community on the eastern edge of what is now Farmington Hills. The name "Farmington" was chosen because it sounded like a location in England that had been abandoned by its previous owners due to bad luck. The town's first store opened in 1848 and the first school in 1850. A post office was established in 1862 and the name changed to Farmington in 1875. The first oil well drilled here were found in 1896 and production began soon after. By 1905, about one-third of all gasoline used for cars went through this well; this led to increased development around this site which today includes shopping malls, professional offices and several high-rise apartments buildings. In 1940, Farmington became an independent city when it merged with nearby Provo (now Provo), Utah to form the Provo–Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). In 1978, Farmington again became an independent city when it joined other towns within the MSA – Cedar City and Herriman – into the same combined city government. Today, FarmINGTON is home to over 20 high-tech companies across many industries including information technology, health care/medical technology/surgical equipment manufacturing, automotive components manufacturing and software development services among others

Farmington was founded in 1847 by Captain David Rice as a small Mormon settlement on the east side of the Jordan River. The first post office in Farmington was established in 1852. In 1902, Farmington became an incorporated city and has since grown to become one of Utah's largest cities with a population over 2 million people.

The discovery of oil during the Great Salt Lake Valley Strike of 1916 led to an increase in manufacturing activity within Farmington over that period; however, it would be until the late 1940s that any major industrial growth would take place within the city limits. With World War II looming large upon America and demand for military goods high following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7th), Factory Township began construction of what became known as "the Monstrosity" – a massive concrete plant which would have a significant impact on local economy due to its size and production capacity alone. When war ended two years later there still wasn't much economic growth ensuing because so much wartime production had been centered around nearby cities like Provo or Salt Lake City respectively; however this changed with the establishment of Deseret Industries in 1948 which inaugurated what has been referred to locally as "the Economic Boom". Over time more residentsChoice chose not to move away from small towns across Utah due to various reasons such as job security or cost advantages while others did establish themselves within what would become known nationally as Deseret Village – an associated business district located adjacent to Factory Township along I-15 Satelite Highway/. Checkerboard development patterns continued through subsequent decades with all types of housing built including single family homes (as well as apartments), condos/townhomes (which often featured gardens or pool complexes) eventually leading up towards Interstate 15 corridor becoming known today simply called "Farmington Hills". As recently announced by Mayor Gary Herbert – who also overseesDeseret Industries' redevelopment plans – changes are coming soon with new shopping centers set up near I-15 exit 109 dubbed "CenturyLink Field" while other developments will include daycare spaces, hotel rooms and even fourplexes!
