The name "Farmington" comes from the Oglala Sioux word "hairy", referring to the many maple trees that line the streets of the town. Farmington is located in east-central Weber County on State Highway 17 north of Ogden and west of Layton hills. The history of Farmington began with two families who moved from Illinois in 1851 to begin a new life in what was then an unsettled area. They named their new settlement after their old home state – Illinois farm country became Utah farm country. This early settlers were farmers and ranchers who raised crops and livestock until railroads arrived in the late 1800s and induced more people to settle hereabouts. By 1900, there were over 100 residents living hereabouts. In 1907, when Farmington became a city through annexation by Ogden, most citizens continued to live on or near their farms while downtown experienced rapid growth as businesses built brick buildings that still stand today including several banks and restaurants including J&J's Cafe which opened its doors in 1924 across from City Hall (now operated by la Mesa Elementary School). Today's business district includes several high-tech companies as well as various small retailers and art galleries along Main Street which has been called "the heart of Farmington." Population growth slowed beginning around 1970 as other nearby towns picked up some slack due to declining agricultural production due to technological advances such as irrigation systems for crops brought about by Post Office Extension Service projects like Snowmass Dam Project; however, population growth has begun again recently with newcomers coming mainly from North America seeking opportunities for job training and escape from increasingly difficult living conditions elsewhere in Utah amplification of effects generated by global economic recession throughout Great Lakes region during recent years (See Ute Mountain Project - www.utahgov) Today’s Millenials are driving much social media activity these days so I thought it would be fun do something different this year blogging about things my generation does outside traditional school hours…. farming! From growing food on our own plots we get produce that goes into our local grocery stores or feeds us straight up at our house…….. In fact we even have a few whole chickens coming out this winter too!

Farmington, Utah is a town located in southern Utah on the Wasatch Front. The population was 8,865 at the 2010 census. Farmington has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years. The first Europeans to visit this area were French fur traders in 1795. They named the area after Jean-Baptiste Farmi, a French officer who had accompanied General Brigham Young on his “Mormon Trek” from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City in 1847. The farmsteads that remain today were built beginning in the 1840s and continue to be used as rural homes and businesses. The first store opened in 1851 inside of what is now the courthouse square. In 1865, one of Farmington's first churches was organized with Rev. John Waddell as its pastor. From this point forward, church services were held at various places around town until eventually being relocated to the current building on Seventh Street in 1903. During World War II, Farmington played an important role as a military airfield supplying RAF Bomber Command with fuel and ammunition for their Operation Market Garden missions against Nazi Germany. Today, many of the original buildings still stand including: Air Force Base (later known as Peterson AFB), which housed fighter aircraft during World War II; Masonic Temple (now home to the LDS Church's Romney Temple); First Baptist Church; and School District No 1 Building (now home to Community College). In 1966, much excitement followed when local residents voted to annex neighboring Provo into their town limits - making it one of only two towns in Utah ever annexed into another municipality! Today, efforts are underway to restore some of Provo's most iconic architecture such as the Provo Creamery & Cheese factory which closed down in 1984; and Main Street Cemetery which holds remains of some of Provo's earliest settlers dating back to about 1800 BC!
Farmington was founded in 1847 by James W. Farmington, a Mormon missionary. The town was named after the farm of the same name that he had been sent to preach to in England. The first post office was established in Farmington in 1850, and the first store opened in 1851. The population of Farmington began to grow rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location on the headwaters of the Jordan River. In 1860, Statehood was granted to Utah and Farmington became a part of what is now Salt Lake City. In 1933, Farmington incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of the most populous cities in Utah.
