Eagle Mountain is a mountain located in the Cedar Mesa quadrangle of Utah. The peak is part of the Bryce Canyon National Park and occupies an area of 188 square miles. The name Eagle Mountain comes from the eagle that was seen nesting on the peak in 1874. The name has been applied to other mountains nearby as well- including White Mountains, Bryce Canyon, and Capitol Reef National Park. Eagle Mountain is part of the Great Basin National Monument which also includes Bryce Canyon, White Mountains, Capitol Reef, and Kanab Hill. The mountain was first sighted by travelers during their travels through Utah in 1811. It wasn’t until 1824 that James Wickersham became interested in its potential as a mountaintop estate for his family. He made contact with local chiefs and they agreed to sell him land on which he would build his home and four guesthouses. In 1830 Wickersham sold his land to Captain John Sibley who built a cabin at the top of the mountain for himself and his family before moving down in 1840 to become governor of Utah Territory. Captain Sibley left behind a letter which reads: “My house stands upon an eminence commanding all parts of this delightful country; it gives me great pleasure to see it filled with people (the Mormons) every Sabbath morning as they go about their religious services; there never was any place I had more reason to be satisfied with than at Eagle Mountain’s summit” (Draper). Captain Sibley spent many years exploring western Utah before returning east in1856 where he founded Springdale Academy near modern day Springdale, UT. He is buried atSpringdale Academy today along with several other notable figures associated with Springdale during its time period such as Brigham Young, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Franklin D Roosevelt

Eagle Mountain is a small mountain in the U.S. state of Utah. The peak is located in Logan County and has an elevation of 4,491 feet (1,524 m). Eagle Mountain is part of the Blue Mountains National Forest. The name for the mountain was given to it by John Dallesandro in 1847 as a tribute to his friend and mentor, General George Washington Irving. The first Europeans to visit Eagle Mountain were trappers led by Captain James Cook on his Fourth of July voyage in 1769-1770. They observed six bald eagles nesting on the summit during their visit and named them "Eagle" because they looked like birds from afar. In 1847, John Dallesandro, an American soldier who had served with General George Washington Irving in Mexico City during the Mexican War, decided to name one of his mountains after his friend and mentor. He accordingly chose Eagle Mountain because he thought it resembled both Washington's profile at left angles seen from high up on Mount Vernon Hill and eagle feathers that could be seen flying across the sky near Lewisburg Gap on the Appalachian Mountains. Dallesandro had discovered Eagle Valley while campaigning along Ioway River during the Mexican–American War; he named this valley for Chief Joseph Arapaho's village where he had been invited by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto while exploring present day Colorado Province in 1540-1541. After crossing into today's Arizona Country east of Payson, Utah on August 12, 1847,[2] Captain James Cook set out from Adventure Bay ()[3] about 120 miles (193 km) south-southwest of Provo,[4] reaching what is now Cache Creek Wilderness about two weeks later[5] on September 14th layering over snowfields including Beaver Canyon which drained into Whatcom River until they reached Kittitas Lake three days later.[6][7][8][9] He described these lands as follows: "A very extensive plain extending several leagues wide bordered by woods most OFTEN containing upwards Of Twenty Oaks each."[10] On September 24th Captains Cook and Haddock made landfall at Cape Disappointment () some 10 degrees north latitude then continued their course easterly via Orcas Island before making land at Fordyce Cove (sic) latitude 40 degrees 30 minutes longitude Wyes Islands off Diego Garcia Island opposite Santa Cruz Atoll"[11],[12].
