Draper, Utah is home to the world's largest binocular factory. The company, Binoculars America, was founded in 1916 by five men who were determined to make the best binoculars available. Today, Binoculars America produces more than 1 million binoculars a year and employs more than 500 people. Binoculars have been around for over 100 years and their history can be traced back to 1839 when Dr. George Parsons invented the first telescopic lens. Binocular manufacturers quickly developed new ways to improve on Dr. Parsons' design and produce better quality products at a lower price point. In 1916, five men in Draper decided they wanted to make the perfect pair of binoculars - one that would provide excellent accuracy and magnification while also being easy to use. They named their product "Binocular." The success of Binocular led to other manufacturers developing similar products, which made it easier for consumers to find high-qualitybinoculars at an affordable price point. By the early 1920's, most Americanbinocular producers had closed up shop due to World War I economic sanctions against Germany; however, a few companies continued production until well into the 1930's. In 1935, George Nolen designed what is now known as the "Nolen Ring" type of telescope mount - an innovative device that allowed users attaching riflescopes or other accessories directly onto optical glasses (pictured). This innovation changed optics forever and gave rise to modern day astronomy enthusiasts who can now take great views with just one set of eyes!
