Cottonwood Heights is a rural community located in the Uintah Basin of Utah. The community straddles the borders of Kane County and Carbon County, and lies on the east side of Cottonwood Creek. The population was 1,612 as of the 2010 census. The first settlers to arrive in Cottonwood Heights were James W. Cowles and his family in 1868. They built a cabin on what is now North Main Street. A few years later, they started a store on South Main Street. In 1879, when Cedar City became a city, Cottonwood Heightsatomized into its own municipality. As cotton production increased throughout the early 20th century, more farmers arrived in Cottonwood Heights to grow crops. By 1920, there were 16 farmers living in Cottonwood Heights. By 1930, however, it had shrunk to 10 people because of rising prices for cotton and other vegetables that were being produced in nearby towns such as Cedar City and Orem. In 1935, after years of discussion among residents about forming a town hall or civic center to serve as an information center for all citizens of Cottonwood Heights, the town legislature passed an ordinance creating Cottonwood Heights Civic Center Limited Edition (later renamed Community Hall). The building was completed in 1936 and served as the town hall until it burned down in 1990. During World War II while most residents were working during hostilities at home or taking care of their families, many men from Cottonwood Heights volunteered with various military units within the war effort including Army Air Forces Station Cedar City- humorously designated "Cottonwoods" - giving them an opportunity for combat duty rather than just working behind enemy lines like many others did before them1 . Afterward many men returned home to continue farming but also ventured into local businesses such as cobbler shops2 . As time passed more women began leaving agriculture for jobs outside their homes3 ; however , some women stayed behind to take care of their households4 .
