Cottonwood Heights, Utah is a census-designated place in Carbon County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood Heights is located on the Carbon River just east of its confluence with the Sevier River. Cottonwood Heights is home to two LDS churches and two schools; one public school and one private school. The community was named after cottonwoods that grow in the area. Cottonwood Heights started as a small town with about 100 residents in the early 1990s when people were moving into new homes in Carbon County because of high oil prices. By 2000, there were over 500 residents living in Cottonwood Heights and it had become an established community with several businesses including a grocery store, real estate company, salon/spa, and doctor's office. In 2006, a few new homes were built on the north side of town by developers who wanted to increase development around their property but found that they could not get enough people to move into them so they sold them all back for less than they paid for them. In July 2007, Kingman Apache Tribe held a ceremony at Cottonwood Hills Elementary School which honored Navajo Chief Joseph Smith Jr., Sr., founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The event included performances from Indian musicians and dancers as well as messages from leaders from both tribes about Navajo history and religious practices. On October 15th 2013 Mormon missionaries visited Cottonwood Hills Elementary School for an hour during lunchtime to teach kids about gospel principles such as baptism by immersion and commandments such as " Thou shalt not steal." At first many students were excited about being able to learn more about Mormonism but soon realized that this was just another lesson like other things their parents told them during dinner time or at church meetings.
