Cottonwood Heights is located east of I-15 and north of US Highway 89. The name Cottonwood Heights comes from the cottonwoods that grow near the community. Cottonwoods were first brought to this area by Mormon pioneers in the mid 1800s. The first post office was established in 1892, and the name was changed to Cottonwood Heights in 1907. The community has several shopping malls and other businesses located within its boundaries. It also has two churches—the LDS Church and an Unitarian Universalist congregation—and a high school that serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. In addition, there are several playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer fields, and a small park located within walking distance of most of the community's amenities. In recent years, some residents have chosen to move out of their homes in order to continue living close to work or family member's residences outside of Salt Lake City; however, many others have continued to live in cottonwood heights because they believe it has become one of the most vibrant areas for cultural activity around Salt Lake City proper.

Cottonwood Heights is a census-designated place in Utah, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is located in Logan County. Cottonwood Heights contains the community of Cottonwood Heights proper and surrounding rural communities. The name Cottonwood Heights comes from the local cottonwoods that are abundant in the area. The first white settlers in this area were James Ewing and his family who began arriving here around 1847. They named their new settlement after cottonwoods found near their home in Virginia. In 1887, some Mormon pioneers arrived here and started to build a small farmstead called "Cottonwood" which they continued to use until 1912 when they sold it to the government for $10,000 dollars. The land around "Cottonwood" became an agricultural center with many crops being grown such as corn, beans, oats, and potatoes. In 1922, a post office was established at Cottonwood Heights with Fenton Waddell as the first mail carrier. At that time there were only 2 residents living here including Mr. Waddell himself who operated the post office out of his barn on Sudden Valley Road . After World War II ended many people returned to live here including Dodge Laughlin who reopened the old Ford dealership on Main Street back in 1951 . In 1957 an annex was added to this town which housed what was then known as "Young's Store". This store closed its doors in 1978 but has since been restored and functions as a museum today . On July 15th 1984 by order of President Ronald Reagan Cottonwood Heights became part of Cache Valley through Executive Order 11421 which stated “that certain areas within Cache Valley be developed for residential purposes” In 1990 another annex was added to Cottonwood Heights adding 3 more residences making it total of 10 dwellings In recent years much development has occurred within Fashion valley due to increasing jobs opportunities within Cache Valley along with plans by Mayor Chris Hansen for higher density housing close to shopping centers as well as professional offices like Google headquarters
