Cottonwood Heights is a small town in the Utah County seat of Provo, located about 12 miles (19 kilometers) north-northwest of the city of Provo and 8 miles (13 kilometers) east of the rural towns of Cottonwood and West Jordan. The population was 1,599 at the 2000 census. The name "Cottonwood Heights" is taken from two local cottonwoods that grow near the town. The first cottonwood was transplanted to this spot by farmers in 1885. A second cottonwood was transplanted in 1931. According to legend, when Brigham Young founded Salt Lake City, he ordered all inhabitants to move westward into what is now Weber County so that he could create a new homeland for his people on these broken mountains. One account has it that when Young saw how difficult it would be for men and children to travel hundreds of miles through hostile country without food or water, he decided that developing Cottonwood Heights would be much easier than creating a new city on an uninhabited continent. In 1949, Mormon pioneers arrived in Cottonwood Heights with the intention of building their own tabernacle—the only one ever built within Utah’s borders. At first they used logs collected along US Highway 89A as construction material; but after several years they found more suitable materials closer to home and began construction on what became known as “The Tabernacle House”—a rectangular stone building measuring 50 feet (15 meters) wide × 25 feet (7 meters) high × 10 feet (3 meters) deep which served as both their religious center and social hall until its demolition in 1978. In 1961, while Builder #1 was still being built out front, Brigham Young conferred with President David O’Connor about plans for The Tabernacle House inside what is now Main Street—and announced that he had chosen Cottonwood Heights as the site for his final resting place! Today visitors can walk outside “The Tabernacle House” walls and see evidence of cutting and adobe work done over 150 years ago during pioneer days when this land was part of an ancient mesa called Cedar Mesa!

Cottonwood Heights is a census-designated place in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood Heights is located east of Cedar City and west of Park City on the shores of Cottonwood Lake. It is bordered by Cedar City to the north and east, John Day to the south, and Stansbury to the west. The first permanent settler in Cottonwood Heights was Lorenzo Snow in 1875. The community grew rapidly due to its good location for agriculture and fishing as well as its access to cottonseed oil from local wells. By 1907, cotton had become an important crop in this area and many homes were built around this time including one known as "The Gilded Cage", which is still standing today. In 1915, when the US Military Base at Fort Logan opened up in nearby Park City, it caused a great deal of growth within Cottonwood Heights thanks to jobs available at the new military installation. However, during World War II there was much conflict here due to munitions being produced by nearby factories that produced weapons for both sides of the war. As a result of this activity, many residents left or were displaced during wartime times with few returning until after hostilities ended. Since then much has changed within Cottonwood Heights with most people now living near either downtown Cedar City or Park City which are two major economic engines within these areas respectively. This growth has led to more development within Cottonwood Heights with several new businesses opening their doors over recent years including Wegmans Supermarket (2007), Ford dealership (2009), KFC restaurant (2011), Dairy Queen (2012) and Starbucks Coffee Roasters (2014). There has also been construction taking place along Highway 82 such as Checkers Casino Resort & Spa which opened up in 2017 adjacent to Cottonwood Hills Elementary School; providing another layer of economic development specifically affecting Tucker Ranch Road between CedarCity and ParkCity proper where residences once stood but have since been replaced by commercial properties while still maintaining some degree of privacy
