Cottonwood Heights is a census-designated place in Utah, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2000 census. Cottonwood Heights is part of the Ogden–Clearfield metropolitan area. Cottonwood Heights is located in northeastern Weber County on the eastern edge of Cache Valley. According to the 2010 Census, Cottonwood Heights has a total area of , all of it land. The community was founded in 1902 by Orson Scott Card and his wife Elsie Morse as "Cottonwoods". The name change came about because at that time there were no other places with similar names in the valley. In 1907, Cottonwood Heights became a town when it was annexed by Ogden. It had a population of 2,046 in 1920; 4,640 in 1940; and 6,724 in 1960. As cotton fields grew larger and more people moved into the town, water shortages led to several water-conservation projects that increased land values within the community while also improving infrastructure such as new schools and bridges. By 1990, cotton production had ended completely within Cottonwood Heights but some residents continue to farm vegetables or fruit there until today due to its fertile soil and mild climate. Today's economy focuses on health care services for locals and visitors who visit Cache Valley as well as recreational activities such as skiing and snowboarding; fishing on four rivers surrounding Cache Valley; horseback riding; mountain biking; general aviation flying during off season (December through May). Cottonwood Heights is a town in Butte County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. Cottonwood Heights was founded in 1868 when the Northern Pacific Railroad built a line from Ogden to Heber City. The name "Cottonwood" originated from the cottonwoods that grew near the town site. The town was originally called "Heber City." In 1905, Heber City merged with Cottonwood Heights and became one municipality. The merger was approved by the Utah Territorial Legislature but not by the US Congress because of different railroad interests. In 1916, Heber City reverted to its original name again and remain as an independent municipality until it merged with Cottonwood Heights again in 2006. According to the Riley-Galloway Census Schedule for 1920, there were 359 people of full or partial Indian descent living in Cottonwood Heights at that time; all but five of whom lived on reservations within Butte County (the remaining residents were scattered throughout other counties). Most of these Indians had been born and raised in neighboring Ogden or Provo. By 1930 only 101 people remained resident on reserves and another 137 people had left for various reasons over that decade; however most Indians still continued to reside within their respective reservation boundaries (and some even visited their homes every day).
