Cottonwood Heights is a small town located in Tooele County, Utah, about 20 miles southwest of downtown Salt Lake City. The population was 1,951 as of the 2010 census. Cottonwood Heights has a large Mormon population and is known for its grocery store and convenience store, two churches (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and United Church of Christ), a post office (1896), three schools, and two baseball diamonds. It also has several private homes. The first settler in Cottonwood Heights was Levi Sitton in 1869. The community was organized on May 12, 1870 by J. D. Waterman under the name "Cottonwood," after an oak tree near the town square where meetings were held to plot the town's boundaries. The first postmaster was Wm Henson with service beginning September 8, 1896. At that time there were only 7 residents living in Cottonwood Heights when it incorporated as a village on November 3, 1912 from parts of Tooele County and Carbon County along with Urbandale to form what would become Salt Lake City suburbia #1 . It took until 1915 for all of Tooele County - including Cottonwood Heights - to be annexed into Salt Lake City proper; this annexation created much controversy because many residents felt they had been forgotten during the process while others saw it as an opportunity to increase their property values . In 1916 Mayor George Romney designated Cottonwood Heights as one of four townships within Salt Lake City limits -along with Park more eastward on Temple Square -to provide social services for low-income residents who could not find other places to live or work . In 1924 cottonwoods outside the city limits were cut down to make way for artificial turf at Municipal Stadium which continues today as home plate/batting practice field for both the Salt Lake Bees (a professional team) and UT Arlington Athletics teams (the University’s NCAA Division I athletics program). In 1932 Brigham Young University purchased 4 acres across from Municipal Stadium site which became campus dormitory housing then eventually student apartments through 1948 before becoming university owned land again . In 1965 Utah Statehood moved much of DIckenspark off University lands into neighboring Carbon County so THAT school can expand further inland towards Sandy Avalanche Resort & Casino but still keep some connective tissue between UT Arlington & DIckenspark CampusDowntownSaltLakeCity
