In 1868, when Utah Territory was organized and formed from parts of the Northwest Territories, President James K. Polk assigned Brigham Young to lead the new territory. Young had been a leader in organizing the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican-American War and he saw an opportunity to build a kingdom in what would become Utah. He quickly assembled a large group of settlers and set out for what would become Clinton, UT. The town was founded on the site of an old fort that had been abandoned by pioneers after they discovered gold in nearby Rush Valley. The town was named for GeorgeClinton, who had served as territorial governor from 1861-1865 and as president of the United States from 1865-1869. The townsite developed rapidly because of its location close to water resources and its potential for agriculture. By 1870, Clinton boasted a population of 100 residents and several businesses including a blacksmith shop, store, post office, schoolbook store, wagon wheelwright shop and two churches completed within two years. By 1875, there were over 200 people living in Clinton with businesses including four banks and three hotels. During its early years, Clinton experienced some economic turbulence due to competition fromrelated settlements such as Mill Creek Junction and Fort Bridger which were established further north on the Great Salt Lake River valley. However, by 1880s relations between local residents and their northern counterparts had normalized enough that voters elected John Atherton as mayor in 1885 despite his lack of experience in government or politics. Atherton presided over one of Clinton's most prosperous periods; while unemployment rates remain high today (in 2009), median household income has increased significantly since he left office (from $27,000 to $59,000). Atherton also unleashed much municipal infrastructure development; In 1886 he installed streetlights throughout town along with new public baths (the first such facility inUtah) which became popular among locals due to their ease of use and low cost per visit compared to earlier versions dating back to prior administrations. However this period also saw some controversies; one prominent issue was land speculation which ledtoheightened tensions between local residents and non-residential developers culminating ina seriesofpolemics knownas "The Clintons' War." Ultimately these conflicts did not have long lasting consequences given greater integration into statewide society by subsequent mayors such as Frank Benson or even later candidates Topney Huntsman or Jon Huntsman Sr.. Nevertheless they are still remembered fondly by many locals today who recall heated conversations about property values at open houses or community meetings where disputes could be resolved through compromise rather than open warfare
Clinton was named after U.S. President James K. Polk, who had grown up in the town of Clinton, Utah. The town was established by Brigham Young in 1847 and it became a county seat in 1850. The first post office opened in Clinton on October 1, 1851. Clinton was originally called Cedar City but changed to its current name due to the fact that there were few cedar trees in the area at the time.
