Gun targets, or game targets as they are known in America, date back to at least the 1800s. In Clinton, Utah, there are several examples of gun targets dating back to the 1860s. One such target is a 10-foot by 20-foot iron post found on the property of Dr. G.W.Fowler. The post was donated to the city of Clinton in 1936 and now features a plaque that reads “This target represents Robert E Grant’s rifle range adjacent to Fowler’s grocery store from which he shot an occasional bird for sport during his early days as an Ordnance Officer with the Uintah Expedition in 1861″ (Langston). Unfortunately for these enthusiasts over time larger calibers became more prevalent due bothto increased military requirements and consumer demand; however smaller calibers still make up an important partof today’sgunnery experience!
