Clinton, Utah is a small town located in the Wasatch Mountains of Southwestern Utah. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. Clinton was named for General Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia Child. The town began as a stop on the Pony Express and grew rapidly due to its location close to both Salt Lake City and Bear Valley gold mines. Today, Clinton is a small community with a population of about 500 people. The first settler in what is now Clinton was James Hales who arrived in 1847. Hales built a cabin on the east side of Main Street near present-day Cache Valley Resort while he was still an employee of the LDS Church’s Welfare Department. By 1850, many other pioneers had also arrived in what would become Clinton including Hiram Handy, Jno[e] Atherton, John Slattery, Michael Quinn and others. Many local businesses were established during this time such as groceries store, post office, hotel and blacksmith shop before development around the area began to take hold with construction of homes ( principally log cabins) beginning in earnest in 1858 and continued until after World War II when most residents moved away for reasons including air quality problems caused bycoal burning power plants nearby; however some remain today as retirees or visitors from nearby towns such as Logan or Saint George . During World War II both the United States Navy Base at Bears Ears National Monument and Liberty Ship Company dockyard were located just south of town on US Highway 12 where large quantities of munitions were produced for use throughout Europe . The post office closed on October 15th 1945 but mail continued to be delivered through private courier services until April 1946 when all public service ended at that point too . The only remaining commercial building from pre-war Clinton is Store #2 which operated from 1907-1959 inside what is now Cache Valley Resort; it has been said that original plans called for another store offosite Main Street but since no evidence exists to support this claim it remains unconfirmed if Store #2 ever actually did open .
