However, these efforts only lasted until around 1950 when guns started becoming semi-automatic instead of requiring manual cocking for each shot fired (the same process that allows handguns to fire six rounds per minute). There are a few bits of information about Clinton, Utah history that can be found. The earliest reference to the town was in 1847 when it was named for General James Clerk Maxwell who served as a colonel in the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican-American War. In 1879, Clinton became a city and in 1907, it was made an incorporated community. In 1916,Clinton became one of the first cities in Utah to become part of the federal government when it was organized as adry county. It remained a dry county until January 1, 1925 when it became one of 34 counties in Utah Territory that were granted statehood. From 1925 until 1959,Clinton served as both its mayor and as its congressional representative from geographic District 21 which included all of Cache Valley and parts of Weber County. During this time period, Clinton also experienced some growth including the construction of several businesses and homes. After leaving Congress in 1959, Clinton continued to serve as Mayor until his death on October 14th of that year at the age of 82 years old.
