Clinton, Utah is a small town in the Great Salt Lake Valley located about an hour and a half north of downtown Salt Lake City. It is home to the Clinton Gunnery School, which was founded in 1868 by James W. Clinton. The school current offers classes in firearms history, safety, reloading, muzzleloading and shotgunning. In addition to the gunnery program, other attractions in Clinton include two golf courses (Stroud Course and Fairmont Course), a nature reserve with more than 20 miles of hiking trails and access to ponds, rivers and lakes. The first firearm ordinance in town was passed on March 10th, 1892 when the Clinton Rifle Club met to discuss how to deal with citizens who were bringing illegal firearms into town. The ordinance limits handgun sales to residents of the Town of Clinton and requires any new handguns sold or leased within the Town must be registered with County sheriff’s office. In 1912, President John F Kennedy made it his policy not to attend state funerals while he was still alive because he felt that attending too many “political funerals” would hurt his chances for being elected president on election day. This policy changed after Kennedy was assassinated instead when he decided that attending such ceremonies would help him heal from what had happened that day. In response to this decision, gun dealers throughout Utah announced they would sell ammunition at prices one third less than normal due to JFK’s death being seen as a sign of peace and hope throughout America during these difficult times following World War II . In 1968 Stroud Course Golf Club opened its course adjacent to Clinton Gunnery School making it easier for people from both towns come play together without havingto drive back and forth each time they wanted to play . After years of growth both courses went under renovations starting in 2001 which increased their length by over 9 holes total making them some of the longest private courses outside of bigger names like Waveland Golf & Country Club & Valhalla golf club . Today there are over 100 members playing on both courses which makes it one of those rare instances where you can find a well-maintained public course next door to an abandoned military base
