During World War II, Clinton became a center for aircraft production of Boeing airplanes after Boeing moved its operations from Seattle to Moses Lake following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The city also produced tanks (M4 Sherman) and artillery (Hethel gun). After 1945, although Clinton continued to grow rapidly due to new industry construction such as Phoenix Mills pulp mill and agricultural production such as haystack cheese from nearby Milk River Valley), its size made it difficult for businesses not already established within walking distance of downtown to keep up with growth rates; this resulted in some downtown businesses closing or moving away altogether between 1950-1970%. However, with strong investment by Mayor Jerald Chamberlain (a Democrat who served until his death in 1978),[1] downtown Clinton experienced significant redevelopment during his four terms as mayor from 1951-1978 that restored many old buildings including two stately hotels which were previously abandoned; renovated theaters (the Masonic Temple was reopened under Chamberlain’s leadership as an art museum); developed several parks including Roosevelt Park; increased commercial development;and created numerous new jobs opportunities throughout the city through various programs such as economic development zones,[ citation needed ] community colleges,[2][3] arts programming,[4][5] job training centers,[6] housing developments,[7][8][9]and open space initiatives.[10][11][12] After years of decline caused by shifting demographics towards western suburbs [13],[14],[15],[16],[17],[18]spurred by suburban automobile commuting patterns beginning around 1990,[19],[20],[21],Clinton experienced a resurgence starting around 2006 when developers announced plans for mixed use projects totaling 2 million square feet along North Main Street which would result in increased retail traffic into central business district; later renamed South Main Street District following similar trends., culminating with reopening of original Masonic Temple theater complex September 2006 under auspices of Mayor Joe Wilson
Clinton, Utah was founded in 1847 by John C. Fremont and his wife, Mary H. Fremont. The town was named for President James K. Polk, who had been born in the area on July 4th of that year. Clinton became a part of the United States in 1912, when it was incorporated as a city. The population of Clinton peaked at around 509 in 1930, but declined to below 350 by 1940 due to the Great Depression. However, the town continued to grow steadily through the years and reached its current size of around 2300 residents as of 2019.
