During World War II much of what now makes up Clinton was destroyed by bombing raids from nearby Los Angeles County: only two buildings still stand from this era: The Smith Store & Grocery building which once housed a bank branch and The Hole mine which served as both shelter for locals during air raids and as an underground storage facility for coal mined nearby until it caved in in 1951 while under construction by local developers; all other buildings have been demolished or have been converted to other uses such as homes or businesses over time.
