These events left fatalities on both sides and destroyed many homes and businesses in ClearFIELD alone. One such event occurred on July 15th, 1868 when an Indian raid killed 14 innocent settlers at Springdale Station along the Clearfield River. Since coming into being as a city,ClearFIELD has experienced significant growth both economically and culturally. Today's residents are made up of numerous different nationalities including Germans, Japanese Americans (some of whom have built some of Utah's most popular tourist attractions), Hispanics/ Latinos (of all ages), Asians (many from South Asia), Australians/New Zealanders, Canadians/Uruguayans/, Egyptians/, Iraqis/, Cubans/, Israelis/, Poles/. And everyone from babies to seniors!
Clearfield was founded in 1864 by John Green and his brother, James. The town was named after the Clear River which flows through it. Clearfield became a railway center in the early 1900s and developed into a small farming community. The first Post Office was established in 1878. In 1916, Clearfield Elementary School became the first school to be built in the town. Clearfield also experienced Business Week in 1912 and 1933 which helped increase its population. In 1945, Clearfield Air Force Base was opened and increased its population by 20%. By 1990, Clearfield had an estimated population of over 6,000 residents. The name of Clearfield has been changed 3 times since it inception- from "John Green" to "James Green", then again to "John Green" until it reverted back to "Clearfield" in 1996
