Clearfield, Utah is a small town in Wasatch County, Utah, United States. The population was 4,057 at the 2010 census. Clearfield is located on the eastern edge of Wasatch National Forest and is part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Area. Clearfield's economy depends largely on agriculture and ranching. The first Europeans to visit Clearfield were French fur traders in 1775-76. The first permanent settler in Clearfield was David Kayser in 1868. A post office called Clearfield was established in 1876, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1907, a group of businessmen from Ogden organized the Utah Western Railway to haul coal from Cache Valley through Clearfield to Provo for shipment to Logan Airport. This helped spur economic development around ClearFIELD as well as other nearby towns such as Draper and West Jordan. After World War II ended, the military moved most of its operations out of Great Britain and into America; this led to a significant decrease in business activity throughout much of Utah during the postwar period. However, since the early 2000s there has been an increase back towards heavy industry due to new investment by both residents and businesses across industries including healthcare (euphemistically known as "healthcare" these days), retail sector growth (+10% yr latest) thanks especially to visits by large chains such as Walmart (~3%, q4 ’2018), Costco (~10%)–the biggest newcomer here since 1990–and several smaller grocers/drugstores among others; while agriculture has seen no major change over recent years other than some modest acreage cultivated for hay or cattle grazing with limited potential for commercial production

Clearfield, Utah is a small city in the Salt Lake County, Utah area. The population was 10,854 at the 2010 census. Clearfield is located on the eastern edge of Weber County and is bordered by Davis County to the south and north, Cache Valley to the east, and Iron counties to the west. Clearfield sits on top of an ancient volcanic mountain that erupted about 18,000 years ago. The name Clearfield comes from "xalapa" which means "a clearing or meadow." One of Clearfield's earliest settlers was George Hargrave who arrived in 1847. He built a cabin on what is now State Boulevard in Clearfield and started a store. A few years later he married Sarah Ladd and they started another store in what is now Temple Square. In 1860 George Hargrave donated land to build a school which became Utah State University; today it is known as BYU-Idaho. In 1865 Brigham Young organized the Latter Day Saints (LDS) here in Clearfield. At first ranching was done but soon goods were being transported by wagon trains overland to Salt Lake City for sale and shipment back home across the Great Basin via San Francisco Bay Bridge Landing where Mormon missionaries served as salesmen selling LDS merchandise to non-Mormons including Chinese buyers whom they called "nuns." The first post office was established in 1870 with John Wight serving as supervisor; mail continued arriving regularly until 1915 when wire services became available through US Postal Service carriers such as Western Union which handled all communications within LDS boundaries until 1978 when those services were transferred to Salt Lake City under then Mayor Rocky Anderson’s administration as part of efforts “to modernize” our downtown core while preserving its cultural heritage” (Utah History Encyclopedia).
