The history of gun sights in Clearfield, Utah can be traced back to the early 1800s. At that time, clear, snow-covered mountains were a popular shooting location and many farmers and hunters used rifles with adjustable sights to target game. One of the earliest such rifle sights in Clearfield was a simple block design called "The Rifleman's Sight." The sight consisted of a circleshooter type mount on the barrel and an aiming post at the front or rear of the rifle. Hunters could adjust their aim by adjusting the position of this post. During World War II, advances in optics made it possible for soldiers on both sides of the conflict to shoot accurately from long distances with precision weapons. As a result, more soldiers began using rifles with gun sights as part of their military equipment. In Clearfield, one such weapon sight was called "The Rifleman's Sight" because it resembled an old military sighting device used by infantrymen during World War II. Clearfield, Utah is a town located in the Utah county of Kane. Clearfield is bordered by Payson to the south, Cache Valley to the east, and North Ogden to the north. The first permanent settler in Clearfield was George Hanks, who arrived in 1847. By 1860, there were twenty-eight families living in Clearfield. In 1860, Josephine Ryburn came to Clearfield and began raising chickens on her property. She named her farm "Ryburn's Domain" after herself and her husband John Ryburn. In 1868 James Waddingham established a flour mill on Fall Creek near present-day Main Street in Clearfield. Waddingham also built a gristmill on Spring Fork downstream from his flour mill. In 1870 Waddingham married Mary Elizabeth Whitehead and started teaching school at Springfork School District #1 before moving his business operations to what is now State Route 128 northeast of town in 1871. In 1875 Fannie Small moved from Topeka, Kansas to establish a mercantile enterprise with two stores at Springfork called "Small's grocery". This venture failed but provided impetus for later efforts by small businessmen and entrepreneurs like Willis Dyer (1892), Ainsworth Burnett (1905), Clarence Gorman (1907), Jerome Bogan (1911) and Edwin Howe (1920). The battle resulted in a Union victory and ended Confederate control over much of central Utah; Cedar Mountain remains one of America's most significant battlefields to this day.
