The Clearfield Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1881. The club's first meeting was held at the home of J.C. Kapp, a local farmer. The club acquired its current property on South Seventh Street in Clearfield in 1886. The club moved to its present location on Main Street in 1907. In 1924, the Clearfield Rifle and Pistol Club became an affiliate of the Utah Rifle Association. In 1940, the club changed its name to the Clearfield Gun and Knife Club Incorporated. The first permanent settlement in Clearfield was made on February 17, 1864 by Brigham Young and his followers after they arrived from Nauvoo, Illinois. The town site was surveyed on October 10, 1865 by John D. Lee and named for George ClearFIELD who had served as judge of an adjacent county during the American Civil War. Clearfield began to grow rapidly as a result of its location at the junction of two wagon roads and its access to water supplies from springs near present-day Provo and Price Streets." In 1862, after the Union army destroyed the Mormon temple in Nauvoo, Illinois, Brigham Young moved his headquarters to Nauvoo and Clearfield became one of his numerous settlements. The first post office in Clearfield was established on May 1, 1852. The first store opened in 1857 and the first sawmill began operations in 1861. By 1865, Clearfield had a population of 514 people and a school. The first railroad reached Clearfield by way of Cedar City on December 3, 1868. In 1870, construction began on the Salt Lake Railroad which connected Salt Lake City with Provo andSpringdale; this line became operational in 1872. In 1896, when clearFIELD incorporated as an independent city it had an estimated population of 2500 people; however this number decreased over time due to natural attrition (deaths from disease or accidents) as well as increasing affluence within the city limits thanks to growing industry within its boundaries including agriculture (cereal production), manufacturing (steel fabrication), lumbering (fiberglass manufacture), mining (silver extraction), shipping (coal transportation), and tourism (visiting local shrines). In 2000 it had an estimated population of 2450 residents living within its borders along with annexed areas of Dune Vista Heights to the south across I-15 from downtownClearfield while portions of West Valley Village adjoin east side streets adjacent to municipal water rights just outside city limits
Clearfield is a city in Clearfield County, Utah, United States. The population was 21,902 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clearfield County and part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The name "Clearfield" was derived from an Australian Aborigine word meaning "hill country." The first European settlers in Clearfield were Englishmen who arrived around 1847. They constructed a small log cabin on what is now the corner of State and Center Streets. A few years later, they erected a larger cabin on what is now Vine Street. In 1861, John Dyer founded Dyers Mill which became one of the largest cotton mills in Utah. The railroad reached Clearfield in 1881 and soon made it an important economic center with its branch lines running through town. The mill closed in 1907 but continued to be used as a storage depot until it burned down in 1931. In 1905, Brigham Young proclaimed that the city should be named after him and his father-in-law Hyrum Smith. By 1960, most of downtown had been replaced by buildings associated with BYU such as Alumni Hall and Student Union Building.
