On December 5, 1959, Clearfield resident John D. "John" Hickey patented a firearm laser system that he called the "Hickey Laser System." The Hickey Laser System was designed to use a light beam from an O2-Laser to fire projectiles at a high rate of speed. The Hickey Laser System proved successful and was soon adopted by law enforcement agencies around the United States. In 1984, the FBI purchased the first operational Hickey Laser System for use in their Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) laboratory.
