Clearfield is a town in Clearfield County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cedar City–Clearfield, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1873 by scribes and miners who mined coal and other minerals near Cedar City. Coal mining ended in the early 1900s, but the town remains an agricultural center with many Farms to support livestock. The first settler to arrive in Clearfield Township was John Dyer on July 10, 1873. Dyer's family had come overland from Pennsylvania that same year on a wagon train headed for what is now Salt Lake City. A post office called Clearfield was established in 1876, and remained open until it closed in 1907. The townsite was platted on December 20, 1879 by Brigham Young as part of his donation to Cedar City to help promote settlement within its boundaries. Clearfield became a city on November 6, 1902 when it incorporated under state law. A devastating fire destroyed most of Clearfield on February 14, 1906; however all residents were able to rebuild quickly due to the community's volunteerism and financial contributions from local merchants and citizens alike. The fire also helped create an appreciation for volunteerism among residents which would continue throughout their history together as a contributing factor to their unique culture and society today. On January 8th, 1912 President William Howard Taft signed Executive Order 9981 giving into effect Social Security legislation passed by Congress two days earlier without any public hearing or debate; this order effectively terminated social security benefits for American workers classifying them as "temporary aliens". As such many people who had received retirement or survivor benefits through SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) during the Taft years lost these benefits as well along with almost all other government-provided programs after 1909 when full-time American wage earners were classified as "workers" rather than "temporary aliens". This event is generally considered one of the biggest political moments in American history because it signaled beginning of World War I while also ending nearly fifty years of open access to social security benefits for those who had contributed toward its creation including many small farmers and business owners across America who were already struggling during that period thanks largely to changes brought about by technological innovation like autos and radio which made working conditions more difficult while reducing hours workweeks down from 52 weeks per year back then down to 34 weeks today due To automation!!
