Centerville, Utah is a small town located in Kane County, Utah. The population of Centerville was 971 as of the 2010 census. The community is named after George Washington Centerville and was founded in 1881. It was incorporated on February 10, 1909. In 1938, Centerville had a post office and two stores. The centennial year of the community coincided with the United States Bicentennial celebration which inspired many events such as an exhibition at the Centerville Civic Center called "A Century of American Culture." The first scopes were built in Centerville in 1881 by Captain Hiram Burritt and his son Amos. Captain Burritt operated a store in Centerville until his death in 1887. His son Amos continued to operate the store until it closed in 1888. After Captain Burritt's death, his son Amos became responsible for building new scopes for the townspeople to use and continue their hobby of optics research and development. In 1898, Alectus Goddard opened a optometry store in Centerville which continues to be open today. Goddard was one of the early pioneers of modern optical science and developed some of the earliest instruments used for astronomical observation including telescopes and binoculars. He also helped develop astrology as an important part of Western culture during this time period In 1902-1903, Wm HARRIS opened what would become known as Harriman's Drug Store on Main Street inCenterville which served as a center for local commerce and sold drugs such as opium, cocaine, etc.. Harris ran this business until he died suddenly at age 67 years old on November 25th 1903 . On December 1st 1903 Jno PEARSON opened up his own drug store next door to Harriman's that would become known as PEARSON'S OPTICS & SCIENCE CO., LTD., operating from its current location today . This business operated from its current location until it closed down due to economic reasons on October 15th 2006 . At its peak during World War II PEARSON'S managed over 120 employees who supplied goods to military personnel stationed throughout Utah . During this time period they also operated several photographic studios across Kane County . After marrying Young's niece, Gilmore moved his family to Centerville in 1872. The first post office was established here in 1873; Centerville became a city on December 17, 1907. In 1922, centennial celebrations were held throughout Logan County to commemorate 100 years of growth and progress made by residents and businesses within the community since its founding date. A parade and feast were held at Centerville's Masonic Lodge followed by a picnic at nearby Indianola Park; both events were attended by local dignitaries and friends of the townspeople. In 1923, Centerville built its first water tower; this tower still stands today as one of town's most distinguishing features. During World War II, many citizens joined forces with other towns throughout western Utah to create "Joint Services Project", performing essential tasks such as construction or labor contributions needed for military installations across southern Utah (Anchorage Naval Base being one notable exception). Many thanks are given to these citizens for their patriotic service during wartime times - much like those who donated time or money towardsCenterville's Parks & Recreation Department during peacetime times! The economy of Centerville is diverse due to its location close to two major highways: I-15 and I-80/I-70/Uintah Road South; these highways have led to increased commerical opportunities for locals over recent years while providing access to various job markets statewide. Centerville started as an agricultural community with crops such as hay and oats being grown. A post office was established in 1887, and by 1907 there were six homes in Centerville. In 1929, Centerville had five businesses with a totalEmployees of 18 people. By 1955, there were only two businesses remaining in Centerville withEmployees of 11 people each; one restaurant and one grocery store. Ascent Copper Mines (now known as Hitec Corporation) began production at nearby Mill Creek Canyon in 1902 which led to increased demand for goods produced by Centerville residents; however, this also caused some decrease in sales due to distance from mills and competition from other towns near Mill Creek Canyon. Ascent Copper Mines closed down operations in 1966 after years of producing copper (a metal often used for coins) at high costs; however, centennial celebrations occurred that year which included selling copper products from local stores such as those found at the Century Mall today. In 1987Centerville had three businesses remaining: two restaurants/bars operated by both familyowned establishments (The Red Fox Tavern & The Blue Moon Cafe)and one large general store operated by Jerald Fenton who ran it until his death in 2001; all these businesses employed 10-15 employees during their most active seasons In 2002Centerville's last business opened up - Save-A-Lot - which became an anchor tenant for the mall until its closure in 2006 due to declining sales and increasing competition from larger malls throughout Duchesne County . This left just two storefronts remaining withinCenterville before itvirtually disappeared completely over time leaving behind scant evidence of its existence save for occasional recollection among current residents about how much fun they had once going out to buy groceries at Save-A-Lot when no other shops existed within walking distance
