The Centerville post office was established on October 15, 1865, by George Auld. It was first called Silver City because silver had been discovered there in 1859. In 1907, it changed its name to Centerville after Territorial Governor John C. Fremont's centennial celebration in which he dedicated a new courthouse and other public buildings in Centerville Township. Centerville is named after General James Hance who fought in both Mexican-American War (1846-48) and American Civil War (1861-65). General Hance's home near Centerville Hill still stands today as does part of his cavalry regiment's encampment there during those wars. In 1870, Captain Abel Purdy organized a small cattle drive from Salt Lake City to Provo through what are now Duchesne and Tooele Counties when he realized that one of his herds could not be sold at $2 per head due to local regulation that prohibited differentiation between game species within Indian Territory without special licenses from the territorial government. He named his herd "Centerville" after his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio where he had been born in 1814.
