Centerville is a small town in Utah that was founded in 1887. Centerville is located on the Wasatch Front, about 25 miles south of Salt Lake City and 15 miles east of Brigham Young University. The population of Centerville was 2,362 at the 2010 census. Centerville is a historical town that was once home to over 20 families. The first settlers in Centerville were James Waugh and his family who arrived in 1887. Waugh built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1898, Elisha Hines and his family came to Centerville from Manchester, England and began to farm the land around present day Main Street and South Park Drive. In 1907, John Atherton purchased the farm known as Big Piney from John Pritchard for $1,000 cash. In 1912, Jens Andersen settled in Centerville after moving from Provo Utah where he had been born and raised. He built the first house in Centerville which still stands today on North Park Drive near the intersection of Main and South Streets. In 1916, centerville decided to join together with other communities around Utah to form an agricultural society known as "The Agricultural Society of Utah". This society helped cooperative farmers share resources so they could grow crops and sell their products throughout Utah County. The Agricultural Society of Utah played an important role during World War I when it provided food for soldiers stationed in nearby Salina (now Provo) Mountain Air Force Base as well as for troops deployed into battle overseas across Europe and Asia. In 1927, Clyde Howe moved to Centerville from Ogden which he had also earlier founded as a small town named after himself - Howe's Corners - after discovering oil reserves within walking distance of his property on State Route 24B near present day Cedar Cityearing Iraq Petroleum Company Ltd., now ExxonMobil Corporation .
