A number of famous people have lived or worked in Centerville over time include LDS apostle Spencer W Kimball and businessman Charles Pratt who built the Sprague Dam across the river from Centerville in 1907. Other notable residents include author Orson Scott Card who grew up here before moving to San Francisco shortly after World War II; musician Neil Young who lived at 221 Third Street for many years while he toured Europe with his band Crazy Horse; actor/director Rob Reiner whose production company worked out of 715 South First Avenue until it closed down in 2001 due to financial problems; basketball coach Rick Majerus who attended Centerview Elementary School here before going on to become head coach at US Air Force Academy where he stayed until his retirement in 2006.; historian Don Fadiman who spent some time living here during his research for his book "Utah: A History"

Centerville was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young as a small Mormon settlement on the Great Salt Lake. The town quickly grew and soon had a population of over 500 people. Centerville became an important commercial center for the area and boasted some of the earliest businesses in the state. In addition to its economic importance, Centerville also played a pivotal role in Utah's history. It was here that Brigham Young first proclaimed himself governor of what is now Nevada Territory. Later, Centerville served as the capital of Utah from 1857 until 1861 when it was moved to Ogden. Centerville also served as the temporary capital during the 1860s because of problems with connectivity between Ogden and Provo.
