He named his new land Salt Lake After reaching out his hand to shake hands with Brigham Young he said "This hand I give you this land; my heart will always follow you." From then on Salt Lake became home to Mormons all across Utah including those living near where they now live- Winter Quarters being just outside of today's CedarCity limits along Interstate 15 In 1871 General James Hinkle organized an expedition againstowan bandits called the Mountain Meadows Massacre which left ten men dead including pioneer John Cagney and four members of Hinkle's party After years Mormon pioneers continued moving into this area making up much of what is now eastern Deseret County On July 24th 1870 Orson Pratt founded Springdale about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of present day CedarCity when he led a company consisting mostly Of Latter Day Saints under the command of Colonel Willard Richards SPRINGDALE WAS FIRST SETTLEMENT IN CENTRAL TUBA COUNTY BY MORMONS ON JULY 24TH 1870 ORSON PRATT AND HIS PARTY
