For example, one significant landmark is the old Aspendale School building which still stands vacant and unused today despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. Additionally, many streets and squares within town remain intact even though they no longer serve as active tourist destinations because they are designated as part of municipal parks or playgrounds instead. Cedar City, Utah is a city located in the U.S. state of Utah. It was founded in 1847 by John D. Lee and his band of Mormon settlers, and became an important center for the church after it was moved from Nauvoo, Illinois to this location in 1857. Cedar City has been the seat of government for both the Cedar City County and Cache Valley County jurisdictions since 1907. The population of Cedar City was estimated at 100,811 as of July 2015,[2] making it the sixth-largest city in Utah.[3] The first permanent settler in what would become Cedar City was John D. Lee who arrived here during the winter of 1847–1848 with his family and twelve others. He named his new town after General Brigham Young's ancestral home on Liberty Hill outside of Nauvoo, Illinois—a decision that seems highly symbolic given that Young had already left Nauvoo for good two years earlier (January 12th, 1846).[4] The Mormons built their first homes here around December 1850[5][6] and soon began Numerous construction projects including a mill which produced flour for local bakeries[7][8], churches[9][10], schools[11],and more importantly hospitality for pioneers traveling through this part of western Utah.[12][13] In 1861 Lees' widow Lucille organized a Ladies Aid Society which raised money to send food to her husband's LDS Battalion fighting in Confederate America; this program continues today as First Sister Giving Back organization.[14] In 1865 Cedar City became the site of one Of The pivotal battles between Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant against Confederate forces under General Robert ELee; although losing 7 out 10 men due to artillery fire only 5 buildings were destroyed or damaged within 2 hours following battle’s end; these days many people refer to this time period as "The Great Battle Of Cedar City".[15][16][17] After being Fort Bridgemaned at Provo Army Airfield during World War II,[18] CedarCity returned back into civilian hands on January 15th 1949 when Mayor Clyde Kiesel announced plans for its official designation as "Cedarcity" following approval from then Governor George Romney.[19][/20][/21][/22][/23][/24],[25]+… Before World War I: Utah Territorial Legislature meets here on 4 occasions: May 10-May 13 1865 November 3-November 6 1867 February 21-March 3 1870 March 26 – April 1 1870 [26]. This meeting establishes Salt Lake Territory Co., UT but no action is taken due to lack federal support at that time while territorial legislatures meet elsewhere also! Finally Red River Expedition Lands Here October 9 1889NOTE:[27]. Territorial Legislature passes ordinance giving citizens right to vote November 16 1890 NOTE:[28]. Territorial Legislatures meet again on January 8 1893 NOTE:[29]. On February 11 1895 Ordinance No 2 is passed establishingCache Valley County NOTE:[30]. Congress creates Bureau Of Indian Affairs September 30 1898NOTE:[31]. Cedar City is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 21,824 at the 2010 census. Cedar City was founded on October 15, 1859 by George A. Smith and others as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Salt Lake City to Ogden. The first post office in Cedar City opened in 1867. The town rapidly grew with the discovery of coal and oil resources in the area and began to develop into an important center for mining, transportation, and industry. Cedar City experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its strategic location on both Interstate 80 (east-west) and Railroad #15 (north-south). During World War II, Cedar City became an important manufacturing center with notable contributions to war production such as aircraft production at Douglas Aircraft Company and shipbuilding at George Denny & Sons Shipbuilders Inc..
