Upon reaching SafetyValley they laid down their luggage and huts near present day slickrock creek. A plaque dedicated to these pioneers reads: "Herein dwelt those that first established Zion--the Latter Day Saints." In 1847 Brigham Young organized a new sect called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which he called the "Mormon Battalion". This group traveled eastward through Clay County Missouri during winter before arriving at Springdale on February 12th 1848 ilesa Salt Lake Valley had been founded two years earlier; this event is celebrated as pioneer day in Utah. In spite of being under surveillance by Ulysses S Grant’s forces while traveling through Nebraska Territory they reached Council Bluffs on April 6th where they made their final preparations for migration across the Great Plains into what would become Oregon Territory ilesa The party numbered 43 men including six women and five children under age 13 months when it departed Council Bluffs March 28th 1850 bound for Fort Bridger overland route via Kearney Nebraska then upriver to Fillmore California crossing over Soda Springs Canyon onto Kings River about 25 miles southwest of Sacramento California where they arrived safely one week later on May 10th 1850 with news that Promethean fire had destroyed Mount Shasta
