The Cedar City Utilities District (CCUD) was formed in 1912 as a result of the merger of two utilities companies, the Cedar City Light and Power Company and the Cedar City Sewerage and Drainage Company. At that time, both companies were owned by individuals. The CCUD is a public utility district that serves all of Cedar City, Utah and parts of Layton and Logan counties. The first high-capacity conversion project in Cedar City took place in 1960 when the city constructed a new water plant to produce more than 1 million gallons per minute (GPM). That same year, the city also built a new court complex and police station. In 1984, the CCUD completed its first full-scale high-capacity conversion project when it commissioned a new power plant to generate more than 5 million watts (Watts). That project also included construction of an energy substation and associated infrastructure. Since then, several other projects have been completed within the confines of CCUD's infrastructure to increase capacity for customers throughout Cedar City. These projects include: In 2008, CCUD completed its third high-capacity conversion project – this time with respect to electricity production. This project involved installation of an additional 3 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity at the existing power plant in anticipation of increased demand from residents for electricity due to expanded use at nearby businesses and government facilities. In 2013, CCUD completed another large-scale high-capacity conversion project – this one with respect to water production. Thisprojectinvolvedtheinstallationofanadditional5megawattpwrplantinaparking lot adjacenttothecityisdrainageworkshopsoundly increasing capacitiesavailabletowatersystemsouthwestofthedialwayandrelocatingseveral millionsoftreesawnintotheareaforwaterpurification。 Thisprojectwasalso celebratedbyCCUDasbeingoneofthelargestevercompletedwithinitsinfrastructurefordrinkingandfloodcontrol purposes.(www2/15/2015)
