Cedar City is home to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and the Cedar Mesa Resort and Casino. The LDS Church began settled in what is now Cedar City by Mormon refugees from Missouri during the 1840s. In 1847, Brigham Young organized a group of Mormons who traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Weber County in present-day Utah Territory to settle what would become Cedar City. That same year, Brigham Young purchased 2,500 acres (1 km²) east of the town on Clear Creek for $350 per acre ($ in 2019 dollars). In 1850–51 whenCache Valley was still part of Weber County, Brigham Young organized a wagon train led by Orson Hyde and Willard Richards to cross Cache Valley and travel westward into Salt Lake Valley. On July 14–15 they reached Millville where they camped for the night before continuing their journey the next day over Stevens Pass into Bearskin Gulch where they found water sources sufficient for their livestock but not soufficient for men or wagons. They continued down slopes until they reached Mount Carmel which they crossed on foot without a bridge; today this summit can be seen from miles away as an impressive rock outcrop known as Lookout Mountain. From there it was only a short walk downhill to Cross Creek where they started cooking their meat over an open fire prior to eating it cold raw with no spices or seasoning allowed: this practice would later be called "kitchen reading." On October 3rd 1851 Joseph Smith wrote:"I saw two great rocks near us on which were placed some coals that I took care not to light lest we should set forth too fast; we spent our time here playing games and taking walks around." This activity likely included Spencer Wagon Wheel which remains one of Cedar City's most recognizable landmarks today
