TheHardestsons had a business concern that operated out of their home until they sold it in 1925. From then on, they opened a store called “The Gun Shop” at First South Main Street. In 1934, they moved their business to Second South Main Street where it stayed until 1984. It was here that John Hardesty passed away. His brother James took over operation of the business and ran it until his death in 1992. In 1995, James’ widow applied for an operating permit to open a second store which she did not receive but which she kept open as a museum known as “The Gun Shop Museum” from 1994-2001 when it closed due to financial problems with her husband’s estate). Today, Cedar City Gun Cleaners operates out of its original building on Third Street between State and Union Streets (it also has an annex on Seventh Avenue). The company has been run by three generations of Hardesty family members: John (born 1926), his son Scott (born 1965), and daughter Amy (born 1973). The current management team includes president/CEO Jeffery Wahlstrom (born 1949), vice presidents/general managers Bob Hembree (1948-51) and Tom Burchill (1964-68), manager of operations Keith Oliphant (1974-1978), assistant manager Rick Hensley (1981-1983) and accountant Don Smith Jr.(1985-1989). When Cedar City first started taking part in gun cleaning activities there were only four people working on this type of endeavor: JH & JH's son Scott; old man Hensley; Ace Hardware employee Bill Goldsmith; and young man Oliphant who cleaned rifles for fun while he attended BYU during summers while he learned accounting skills

Cedar City had a flour mill built in 1876 and a blacksmith shop built in 1886. The first store opened in 1888 and closed in 1912. A school was established here in 1889 and closed the same year. A hospital was built here in 1902 but it closed the same year as well. The population of Cedar City decreased from 2,816 at the 2000 census to 1,912 at the 2010 census. It has since decreased again to 1,613 at the 2016 count.
