The history of the AR15 upper receiver is as follows: The first AR15 rifles were designed in 1963 and released in 1964. They were chambered for the 5.56mm NATO cartridge. In 1970, a redesigned rifle was released called the M14. It featured a new barrel design that allowed it to shoot rounds up to 76 caliber. In 1994, another redesign of the M14 called the A3 was released which featured a new magazine system and a Picatinny rail on top of it that allow for attachment of accessories like optics or grenade launchers. This gun had many different features including an AK-47 style stock and polymer handguard that made it extremely durable and lightweight.
