Cedar City is a city in Cedar County, Utah. The population was 9,762 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cedar County. Cedar City is home to The University of Utah and the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Airport. The first settlers in what is now Cedar City were farmers who arrived in 1847 from Illinois. They founded a town called West Jordan on the west bank of the Red River, about two miles (3 km) north of present-day downtown Cedar City. In 1850, they renamed their new town Cedar City after one of their own brothers, James C. Cedar, who had become president of the United States Bank in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1857–58, Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young built a stockade around what is now downtown and then began farming here. In 1869–70 construction began on a courthouse and jail which would serve as both judicial and penal institutions for Mormons accused of crimes or found guilty by juries without trial. The courthouse was completed in 1870 and served as municipal hall until it was replaced by the current structure in 1931. The jail also became operational that year and served as both local detention facilities as well as a prison for Utah State Prison inmates from 1872 until it closed its doors in 1957 following statehood within Utah. The early settler communities near where today's downtown core stands were oriented primarily agricultural: Willard Grove on the south side of Red River Gorge; Wellingboro on hills to the east; Knob Hill oneness to the north; Maple Valley to the northwest corner of present-day downtown; and Fairview Heights southwest across Pershing Drive from present-day Downtown but including much older neighborhoods such as Dutch Flat to its east side along Hidden Hills Road just outside today's city limits A post office was established at West Jordan in 1850, serving residents throughout most of present-day central Cedar County except for parts northeastward along Interstate 15 close to Provo airport while Postmaster General John Atchison operated mail services between Provo and Ogden through Rockville Center Railroad service reached this area only intermittently during early years with travelers having to walk or ride horseback overland Texas Canyon situated immediately northeast (and including today's Pioneer Square)of Kimball Avenue NW made possible easy access by wagonloadloads (later cars)of plums, pears, apples etc., essential for Early Mormon settlers’ religious needs
