Brigham City, Utah is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. Brigham City is located on the eastern edge of Kane County and on both sides of the Wasatch Mountains. The first permanent settlement in what is now Brigham City was established by Latter-day Saints in 1847 as part of the wagon train from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City. On July 12, 1850, President Brigham Young declared that all believers everywhere should come to this new land and build up an equal society there. This proclamation led to the founding of Brigham City as a town by Joseph Fenton on October 9th of that year. In 1857 LDS pioneers John Davenport and his wife Hyrum Smith traveled through central Utah looking for sites for a Mormon temple (the Great Temple). They found several potential sites including what is now Brigham City but they decided on Cedar Valley because it had smooth soil and good water resources. Cedar Valley became known as The Promised Land because it would be where Mormons could find eternal life if they built their temple there. On November 15th 1860 LDS missionaries Orson Hyde and Heber Crouch arrived in what later became Brigham City after journeying across North America for many months preaching the Gospel among native peoples such as the Paiute Indians who lived near Cedar Valley Ranch east of today’s downtown area. After speaking with some elders at CedarValleyRanch about their faith, Orson Hyde baptized three Indian converts there on December 3rd 1860 – Hiram Judd (age 10), George Rapp ( age 8) and Salmon Chase (age 6). These early baptisms were key to cementing LDS support for settlers in this region which quickly grew around them; over time other branches of Christianity followed suit and various buildings were erected here including two hotels operated by apostles Isaac Stern & John Taylor: one at Fifth Avenue and one near today’s Main Street corner just east of Park Lane Square – becoming known simply as “The Temples” or “The Stakes” during this time period when temples were not yet required by law. Today’s downtown area forms principally around Third Street NE corner Park Lane Square being where most businesses are situated; additional downtown development continues along Center Street NW between First Avenue SW Subway station & University Place malls while also adjacent to South Temple Parking Garage off Commonwealth Boulevard west side currently used by local government employees only
