Gun targets have been a part of the history of Brigham City, Utah for over 100 years. The first target was erected in 1868 on what is now the south side of Temple Square. It was a 10-by-12-foot iron frame with an 8-inch hole through it. There are many types of targets that can be used to shoot at. Gun targets can be made from a variety of materials, including paper, plastic, metal, or cloth. They can also be designed in a variety of ways to make them more difficult to hit. There are two main types of gun targets: silhouette and color target. Slit-and-shoot targets offer a quick and easy way to practice shooting at different shapes and sizes. Color target targets offer an opportunity to learn how to identify different colors and patterns on moving objects. Slit-and-shoot targets are the most common type of gun target because they are relatively easy to set up and use. To set up a slit-and-shoot target, first cut one end off an old piece of paper so that it is about twice the size of your hand. Cut another piece of paper half as large as the first piece and place it over the top edge of the slit in the middle of the two pieces of paper you just cut. Then fasten one corner closed with clamps or staples (see illustration). Now take another sheet of paper (about twice as large as your original sheet) and fold it in half so that it covers both ends of the slit in the centerof your new pairof papers (see illustration). Make sure that there is enough overlap on either sideso that when you hold both sheets together, there is no gap between them (See Figure 1). The first gun target in Brigham City, Utah was a 3-gun salute at the old Armory on Main Street. On October 7, 1868, an event which is still celebrated annually, Mormons from throughout the Salt Lake Valley gathered at the Armory to shoot off shotguns and pistols. The first rifle target was shot at the nearby Park Meadows Shooting Range on October 10th of that year. On November 8th of 1868, a company of sixty men from Cedar City marched into town for their annual picnic. They brought with them six guns and four shotguns, plus many rounds of ammunition. The Brigham City Rifle Association was organized that day and began shooting targets at Point Lookout Park. On December 13th of 1868, Battalion Captain George Atherton organized a game of “ toss for balls” between companies stationed along South Temple Street in downtown Brigham City. This was one of the earliest examples of team sports in Utah. In 1862 two young men named John Crouch and John Waddell founded the Cedar Rapids Gun Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to challenge other gun clubs in east Iowa to shoots matches outdoors - they accomplished this by hiring someone to guide them on a shooting excursion around each club’s property (the first known shotgun hunt). When they returned home they taught their nephew James Waddell how to fire shotguns using these trips as practice so he could take over when his uncle died suddenly in 1865 (a member of his party had been killed during the trip). In1866 James Waddell moved back to Utah Territory where he opened a store called The Sporting Goods Warehouse near main street square in Brigham City selling firearms and Ammunition from his establishment until his death there in 1903; what is now called "The Waddells" Store survives today as part of US History Museum's collection
