Brigham City, Utah is an unincorporated community in Carbon County, Utah, United States. As of the 2010 census, Brigham City had a population of 1,898. The name Brigham City was given to the settlement by Mormon pioneers who arrived there in 1847. The first permanent settler in what would become Brigham City was James W. Grant who established a farmstead on the current site of the city in 1851. Grantsville was also founded nearby and soon became known as the "Gateway to the Wasatch Front." By 1857, alluvial gold had been discovered at Deadwood Creek and Brigham City quickly became known as one of the leading centers for mining in Utah. In 1863–64, Joseph Folsom became president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and began construction on Salt Lake Temple which was dedicated in 1865. A second phase of temple construction began two years later and ended with its completion in 1871; this phase included another large main temple and several smaller temples across town. Because so much attention was being paid to Temple construction, little attention was given to other aspects of brigham city's development such as its infrastructure or economy; however, this changed after Folsom's death when his successors began paying more attention to these areas. In 1886–87,[1] Brigham Young organized what would become called the Agricultural Improvement Association (AIA), which spent $425,000[2] on land acquisitions and projects throughout Utah between 1886 and 1888.[3] One project funded by AIA involved building a irrigation canal from Cedar Mesa Reservoir eastward through long flat valley bottomlands west of Provo into what would become Beaver Dam National Wildlife Refuge. This canal increased agricultural production within range of LDS settlements while providing water resources for cities like Provo and Ogden along with other strategic goals set by Young including connecting different valleys into a single network that could support larger populations than could be found within individual towns.[4][5] Another major project funded by AIA involved establishing a 500-acre cotton plantation near present day Cottonwoods Junction near Weber Valley; this plantation would provide employment for local farmers as well as help develop new markets for LDS products outside Ofra territory
