American Fork, Utah is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 599 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Wasatch Range and along Interstate 25. The name "American Fork" was given to this community by pioneers who discovered a fork in the river near here while exploring their new land in 1847. They named it after General George A. Armstrong's headquarters at American Fork Summit east of here. The first post office was established at American Fork on December 16, 1851, and ZIP code 82002 was assigned to this community on January 1, 1957. The ZIP code has been unchanged since then. The town grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location close to both Interstate 25 and major highways. In 1925, American Fork had a population of 1210 people; by 1930 it had doubled that figure to 1830 people and reached its peak around 1940 with a population of 3200 people. However, during World War II American Fork saw significant growth as war-related industries developed such as aircraft manufacturing and munitions production; by 1945 it had increased to 5000 residents. However, although American Fork enjoyed high levels of economic development throughout much of the postwar period it experienced some resurgence during the late 21st century as a result of various small businesses opening up in downtown along with efforts to revitalize downtown streetscape with new artesian water features and light fixtures (the latter adding Garnet Street into national media). At present day there are still few indications that America Fork once enjoyed significant socio-economic prosperity circa 1925-1945 relative to other nearby communities which experienced far greater growth rates for those same decades despite having less access to interstate travel or other forms of stimulation from outside sources - significantly so for Downtown Americans Fork where nearly all commercial activity presently takes place off Garnet Street rather than within easily accessible pedestrian-accessible core blocks bordered by busy arterial streetscapes) . Notwithstanding these generally negative trends however recent Census data do provide insight which when combined provides valuable perspective into overallerves citizens experiencing today’s outdoor activities & interests thruout most if not all aspects/areas serviced occupying over half total acreage within urban limits classified as “ Downtown”
American Fork, Utah is located in the Wasatch Mountains of southwest Utah. It was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and named for General David Hunter American Fork, who had fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War. The town developed around the military base that was established there. American Fork experienced significant growth during World War I because of the vast amount of production that took place at the nearby Shipman munitions plant. After World War II, American Fork became a center for agriculture, with a large population growth rate during the 1970s and 1980s.
